Overview of the Push Power Measurement Wheel System
When attached to the wheel of the racing wheelchair, the system quantifies all information that affects racing performance, such as the difference in the amount of power applied to the right and left wheels, acceleration and deceleration factors, and the timing when the maximum speed is reached. By numerically expressing the characteristics of the riding form of each athlete, which tended to be understood intuitively, analysis based on objective data becomes possible.
Moreover, by making it easier to compare measurements taken with different units of racing wheelchairs and to check how performance has improved compared to the past based on data, Honda is striving to support athletes to find more efficient training methods for themselves.

Background and Motivation
We began developing this system with the aim of enhancing athletic performance by measuring human movement. Through our research on walking, we found that the ground reaction force—the force received from the ground while walking—plays a critical role. This insight led us to consider applying the same principle to wheelchair racing.
By measuring the propulsion force applied to the hand rim to move the racing wheelchair forward, we believed we could contribute to improving athlete performance and therefore initiated the development of this system.
Benefits of the Push Power Measurement Wheel System
At high speeds, the contact time with the hand rim is less than 0.15 seconds, making it difficult to grasp the details of the applied force based solely on observation or sensation.
This system measures the magnitude, direction, and position of the force every 0.0025 seconds, transforming training that once relied on intuition and experience into a scientific, data-driven approach.
With this system, athletes can objectively understand their propulsion technique, while coaches can provide more accurate instruction. The system visualizes the fleeting moments that human senses alone cannot capture.
Insights from the Data
With this system, the strength and direction of propulsion force can be measured with precision, enabling users to identify the factors that contribute to acceleration or deceleration, as well as to analyze how differences in gloves, form, or seat cushion height affect propulsion. A key advantage of the system is that aspects previously judged by intuition can now be confirmed with data.
By using the system periodically, about once every six months, athletes can connect their perception with actual movements of force, leading to higher-quality training.
User’s Voice — Yukifumi Yamamoto
For his fifth measurement session, we spoke with Yukifumi Yamamoto about his experience using the Push Power Measurement Wheel System.
*Interview conducted in June 2025.
*These are Mr. Yamamoto’s personal impressions and do not represent a guarantee of effectiveness.

Were there any findings or insights you gained from the measurement?
Based on the results from my previous session, I tried to apply corrections in training, but there was still an imbalance between left and right. In particular, my left elbow was not raised enough, which prevented proper contact. I also realized that with my dominant right hand, I still was not pushing all the way through and had untapped potential.
How do you make use of this measurement system?
The data provides confirmation of my approach to propulsion. In my case, I have an ideal form in mind, and by checking the results against this image, I can confirm that my direction is not off track and work to improve areas where I am still lacking.
What do you see as the main benefits of the Push Power Measurement Wheel System?
The greatest advantage is that it allows me to take measurements using my own racing wheelchair and hand rims. Athletes are particular about the diameter, thickness, and material of their hand rims and how they match with their gloves. Being able to measure with the same tools used in actual races provides data that more closely reflects real conditions.
In addition, being able to conduct measurements on a track, just as in competition, is another benefit, as it allows testing under conditions close to the actual race environment.
From a coach’s perspective, showing data to trainees can also add persuasiveness to their instruction.
Do you feel the difference from actual racing because of the wheel’s weight (9.2 kg for both wheels)?
Yes, there is some effect on the initial acceleration, but it does not impact measurement at peak performance, so I do not see it as a disadvantage. The feel becomes close to that of the wheels I normally use once the speed reaches around 20 to 21 km/h.
